In Stratford-upon-Avon, the English you hear in the street often comes from somewhere else: the whole world comes to visit this town, and outside Shakespeare’s house people speak every language except the one you came to learn. That is why the format makes more sense here than elsewhere: you don’t go looking for the language outside, it is in the house where you sleep.
What you can see from Stratford
The good thing is that almost everything is in town: the house where Shakespeare was born, Holy Trinity Church where he is buried, the butterfly farm just across the river, and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage a little way out. Warwick Castle and the Coventry Transport Museum are a proper trip out, and your teacher goes with you.
None of this is included in the week: you choose and pay one thing at a time. What you can reach from your teacher’s home depends on where they live, and the profile tells you before you confirm.
Sleeping in a town that never sleeps
You have your own room in your teacher’s home and three meals a day with the family; you arrive on Sunday and leave on Saturday, and the one-to-one lessons come in blocks of ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five or thirty hours. You set the timetable with your teacher once you are there. If you already have somewhere to stay, you take only the lesson hours, at your teacher’s home, without the room or the meals. Two things before you buy your ticket: your passport and, unless you are a British or Irish citizen, the Electronic Travel Authorisation, explained on the page about the ETA; and for everything else — what is included, what isn’t, how a week goes — it is all in how a stay at your teacher’s home works.
Your child among the visitors
They are the only student in the house, and the way the arrival and the days work is the same everywhere: I have written it down in how a stay at your teacher’s home works. What changes in Stratford is that the town is full of people all year round: your child doesn’t arrive somewhere empty, but they are the only young person in that house, and in the afternoon they go out with their teacher — Warwick Castle, the Redwings horse sanctuary — not on their own among the visitors.

These are indicative starting prices and may vary.
The price is the standard UK rate. Here, what you really decide is how many doors you open: Stratford has five or six museums, each with its own ticket, so the same afternoon can cost nothing or a lot depending on where you go in. I tell you in writing beforehand which ones charge and how much, so the choice is yours and not a surprise at the end.
Questions about Stratford
Where does the transfer leave from?
From Birmingham airport. The transfer is arranged — by the family, a driver or our local contact — and it is added to the stay: there is a charge for it, and it appears in the proposal.
You hear every language but English in the street: will I still learn?
Yes, because the street isn’t where you learn. The hours that count are the ones at the table with your teacher and the ones at dinner, and there English is the only language. And for someone who is shy about speaking, a town where everyone makes mistakes is actually quite reassuring: nobody looks at you oddly if you stop in the middle of a sentence.
Write to me with the dates
Write to me with the dates and tell me who is going: if it is you, what you’d like to be able to say in English and can’t yet; if it is your child, their age and what makes you hesitate — that is what makes me choose one house over another. In Stratford and the villages around it, houses aren’t picked from a catalogue: the earlier you write, the more choice I can give you, because I would rather send you the right house than the first one that is free. You’ll find the other regions on our page about a language stay in England, and the form is here.
