In Antwerp you hear Flemish from the moment you leave the station — Dutch as it is spoken in Flanders, and here it isn’t a subject: it’s what you order your coffee in. People who come to learn it in this city learn it in the house of someone who speaks it.

The afternoon starts in the street
At ten hours a week most of the afternoon is spent outside, which is where you have to speak: in Antwerp that means the docks, or the streets around the station, with your teacher explaining what is in front of you. The visits are added to the stay and paid separately, and your teacher takes you. At twenty or twenty-five hours the afternoon shrinks: you are out for the shopping and the tram, and that is language too. It is why someone with only a few days uses all of them: you don’t have to look for chances to speak, they come at you.
If the person coming is your child
If it is your child sleeping at the teacher’s, they live with the family that teaches them, and it is that family looking after them day to day — and it’s them who ask, at supper, how the day went. What depends on their age — the transfer, who travels with them, the activities that go with the lessons up to eighteen — I have written on the Belgium page, because it is the same across the country. What changes here is only the afternoon: Antwerp is a city you cross on foot and by tram, so taking them out doesn’t mean taking a train.

Questions about Antwerp
Can I ask for a house inside Antwerp itself?
Ask, and I’ll keep it in mind while I look, but I can’t promise it: it depends on who is free on your dates. The profile names the town before you decide, and if it doesn’t suit you I’ll go and look again.
Is it better to arrive at Brussels or at Antwerp?
For Flanders there are two arrival points, Brussels and Antwerp, and which one works better depends on where the teacher I find for you lives: the profile tells you. If the teacher can arrange the transfer I put it in the proposal as a separate service, paid on top of the stay.
What I need to start looking
Tell me when you are free, how far you have got with the language and what you want to be able to do by the end, even roughly.
