In Devon, the afternoons are spent outdoors: two zoos, a farm, an aquarium, a donkey sanctuary, waterfalls in the woods. If it’s your child who is going, that is the reason to choose this region over another; for an adult, it means the day doesn’t stop when the lesson does.

What Devon puts into an afternoon

What you can reach depends on where your teacher lives: from one house the afternoon is Paignton or Dartmoor, from another Kents Cavern or Burgh Island, and in some parts of the region there is also a castle and a museum. These are visits that are added to the stay and paid separately; the profile tells you which ones are possible from that particular house before you confirm.

For an adult, it is the opposite that matters: you can spend a week without ever taking a train, and you practise your English on walks, not just on visits.

Your child, the only student in the house

They are the only student in the house, and in the evening it is their host family who asks them how the day went. In the afternoon, they go out: up to eighteen, lessons are booked together with visits or activities, and in Devon that means a morning of lessons and then Pennywell Farm or the Plymouth aquarium, with their teacher beside them. Up to sixteen someone is waiting for them on arrival, unless you travel with them, and I give you the name before they leave; under thirteen there is always an adult in the house.

The week, and the two formats

A single room in your teacher’s home and three meals a day with the family; the week runs from Sunday to Saturday with one-to-one lessons, from ten to thirty hours, with the timetable agreed with your teacher once you arrive. If you already have somewhere to stay, you can also take the lessons on their own, at your teacher’s home, without the room or the meals. One thing to sort out before you buy your ticket: for the UK you need your passport and, unless you are a British or Irish citizen, an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which I explain step by step on the page about the ETA. Everything else is in how a stay at your teacher’s home works.

The price is the standard UK rate. In Devon, the line that moves most is the visits: an adult can take none, while for a minor they are part of the stay and so weigh more on their total than on yours. In the proposal, I price them one by one.

Questions about Devon

My child is going alone: what do they do in the afternoon?

Not alone: to the zoo or the farm, they go with their teacher or with an adult from the family who knows the way. It is also the afternoon when they speak the most English of the day, because they have to ask, understand and answer somewhere other than the lesson table.

Where does the transfer leave from?

For Devon the arrival points are Exeter airport and the port of Plymouth. The transfer is arranged — by the family, a driver or our local contact — and the profile says which of the two it leaves from; it is added to the stay and paid separately.

Write to me, I’ll see who is free

Tell me when you’d like to come. If it is your child who is going, their age and whatever is worrying you matter too: that is often what makes me choose one house over another. I then send you the profile of the person who is free those weeks, with the proposal and what can be reached from their home — in Devon, that is what changes most from one family to another. You can read it in your own time, and nothing is confirmed until you say yes. You’ll find the other regions on our page about a language stay in England, and the form is here.
