In Liverpool, what you go and see in the afternoon nearly always tells the story of the city itself: the port, what passed through it, and the music that came out of it. That makes a practical difference when you are learning a language — in the evening, at the table, you have something to talk about that isn’t the weather, and your teacher has an opinion on it.
Afternoons with a subject
The Maritime Museum and the Slavery Museum are in the same docks, side by side: the same story seen from both sides, and you come out with something to say at dinner. Then there is the music, which has two addresses here — the British Music Experience and the Beatles museum, and the tour around the city. The Museum of Liverpool and the World Museum tell the story of what the port brought in. And if the family are football fans there is the stadium; if it is a teenager who is going, the aquarium and the planetarium fill an afternoon. If art is what interests you, there are the Tate and the Walker Art Gallery.
Visits aren’t included: you take them one by one and pay for them separately. How many fit into a week also depends on where your teacher lives — from the centre you walk, from a neighbourhood further out you need transport — and the profile tells you before you confirm.
The room, the meals and the hours
You have your own room in your teacher’s home and three meals a day with the family; you arrive on Sunday and leave on Saturday, ten to thirty hours of one-to-one lessons, and the timetable is agreed with your teacher once you are there. If you already have somewhere to stay, you take only the lesson hours, at your teacher’s home, without the room or the meals. Before you buy your ticket: your passport and, unless you are a British or Irish citizen, the ETA; and what is or isn’t included is in how a stay at your teacher’s home works.
A teenager who has to ask for things themselves
They are the only student in the house, and the arrival and the days work as they do everywhere: it is written in how a stay at your teacher’s home works. What changes here is that Liverpool is a real city: in the afternoon they go out with their teacher — the aquarium, the stadium, the planetarium — and these are outings where they have to ask, understand and answer people other than their host family. For a teenager who keeps quiet out of shyness, that is often where things open up.

Questions about Liverpool
Which airport do I arrive at?
Two are possible: Liverpool and Manchester. The family’s profile says which one the transfer leaves from; it is arranged — by the family, a driver or our local contact — and there is a charge for it.
Isn’t the Liverpool accent a problem for learning?
It is a fair question. Your lessons are one-to-one: your teacher talks with you, not in front of you, and adjusts what they say to what you understand. Outside, the accent is there, and that is the part that trains you: an ear that has managed a week here has an easier time anywhere else in England.
Who is free, and from when
Tell me when you would like to go and what you would like to be able to do; if it is your child, their age and what makes you hesitate. I look at who is free in and around Liverpool, and I send you the profile of one person with the proposal and what can be reached from their home. You can read it in your own time: you’re not committed to anything until you say yes. You’ll find the other regions on our page about a language stay in England, and the form is here.
