In Cornwall, the road ends in the water. The villages cling to their harbours, the houses run down to the quay, and in winter it is the wind that decides how the day goes. Nobody passes through here by chance: you come on purpose.

Here the days aren’t cut into slots

There is your teacher, their home, the village, and the weather. Conversations last because nobody has a train to catch: they start at the table and you don’t notice when they end. If what you need is to finally start speaking, that matters more than a town centre.

I’ll tell you up front: here there are no shop windows, no busy streets, no train ready for every trip. If that is what you are looking for, the same stay exists in a city, and I’m happy to suggest it.

The week, and the two formats

You have your own room in your teacher’s home and three meals a day with the family; the week runs from Sunday to Saturday with one-to-one lessons, from ten to thirty hours, and the timetable is agreed with your teacher once you arrive. If you choose ten hours, you book them together with activities or visits, which are added to the stay and paid separately. If you already have somewhere to stay, you can also take the lessons on their own: you go to your teacher’s home for the lesson hours, without the room or the meals. One thing to sort out before you buy your ticket: for the UK you need your passport and, unless you are a British or Irish citizen, an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which you apply for online — I explain the steps on the page about the ETA. Everything else is in how a stay at your teacher’s home works.

Your child on the coast, with just one teacher

They are the only student in the house, and it is their host family who looks after them day to day. Up to eighteen, lessons are booked together with activities or visits, so that they spend the afternoon outside with their teacher — a quay, a beach at the end of the day — and not in their room on their phone. Up to sixteen the transfer is arranged, unless you travel with them, and before they leave I give you the name of the person who will be waiting for them. Under thirteen they are never alone in the house: there is always an adult with them.

The price is the standard UK rate. The line that can move most is the transfer: for Cornwall there are two arrival points, Newquay airport and the port of Plymouth, and you don’t choose which one — the house does. As soon as I know who is hosting you, I price it separately in the proposal.

Questions about Cornwall

Are all the houses by the water?

No, and I won’t promise it before I have the house: in Cornwall there are harbour villages and villages a little inland, where the sea is a walk away rather than the view from the window. The profile gives the name of the village and what you find there, and you read it before you confirm.

Do I need a car?

It depends on the house. In some villages the shop and the bus are within walking distance, in others there is much less. Tell me if you plan to get around on your own: I take it into account when I search, and the profile says what there is nearby.

To get started

Tell me when you’d like to come and what you would like to be able to do; if you can’t name your level, “I understand it but I don’t speak it” is enough. If it is your child who is going, their age and whatever is worrying you matter too. I look at who is free in Cornwall, on the coast or a little inland, and I send you the profile of one person with the proposal: nothing is confirmed while you read it, and if something doesn’t suit you, I look elsewhere. You’ll find the other regions on our page about a language stay in England. And if, as you read, you found yourself drawn to the countryside inland, tell me: in the Cotswolds you sleep in a stone village and the sea plays no part in the story. The form is here.
