Who Comes to Malta: Adults, Seniors and Teenagers
Very different people come to Malta with us, and each of them is the only student in the teacher’s home. For a working adult, one or two intensive weeks are enough, and what you learn in the morning gets used the same afternoon, because English is one of Malta’s two official languages: the bus timetable, the newspaper and the pharmacy counter are all in English. For over-50s and retired travellers, November to March is the season to look at: the days in Valletta sit around 15 degrees and the island is quiet. The flight is about three hours from most of western Europe, the airport at Luqa has a single terminal, and nothing on an island 27 kilometres long involves a long drive.
Teenagers are hosted one at a time, which for a parent is the alternative to a group summer course. Your child is the only student, lives in the teacher’s own family and is looked after day to day by the host family. Under 18, accompanied activities or visits are compulsory. Under 16, the transfer is compulsory unless the parents accompany the child themselves. Under 13, closer supervision is compulsory, with an adult present at all times. You receive the host family’s profile before anything is confirmed.
In Malta the logistics are simple: there is one airport, at Luqa, and no journey from it to the host’s village takes much more than an hour, so you know where your child is going and when they will arrive. English is spoken outside the house as well as at the table — on the bus, at the kiosk, at the lido — so your child keeps using it between lessons, and the ferry to Gozo or the bus network covers anything the family plans at the weekend.

Yes. You arrive on a Sunday, you leave on a Saturday, and lessons run from Monday to Friday. If your flight lands late on the Sunday evening at Luqa, tell us: we let the family know and the arrival is organised around it. And if you need one or two extra nights, they are added to the stay.
Yes, and it is one of the first things we ask. Before we propose a host, we know whether there are pets, children or smokers in the house, and how the family eats. Many Maltese homes are town houses built around a courtyard or a roof terrace rather than a garden. You see the profile before you confirm, and if something does not suit you we look for another family.
You choose 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 hours a week, and the 10-hour option is combined with activities or cultural visits. The timetable is set with your teacher: two hours in the morning and one after lunch, or the whole block in one go, depending on your concentration and on what you want to do outside. In July and August, put the lessons in the morning and keep the afternoon for the sea. If you are coming mainly to talk, 10 or 15 hours with activities leave room for the ordinary life of the house.
Moments of ordinary life, not lessons in disguise: cooking or baking together, the Sunday fish market at Marsaxlokk, a walk through the streets of Mdina, the cinema, a board game, a village festa, a swim or a picnic. You choose them with your teacher, according to your interests and to what is near their home. During those hours, transport and entrance fees are included. Cultural visits — Valletta, the Three Cities, the temples at Ħaġar Qim — are a separate option, with a list of their own for each destination.
A private bathroom is available as an option, depending on the host. And if you already have somewhere to stay on the island, a flat in Sliema or a hotel in St Julian’s, the lessons-only formula keeps the same one-to-one lessons at the teacher’s home, without the accommodation.
July and August are hot and dry, often above 30 degrees and humid, and the sea stays warm into late October. Winter is mild rather than cold: around 15 degrees during the day, with rain and wind between November and February. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons for walking Valletta or Mdina in the middle of the day. If you want daylight and a course out of season, Malta works from November to March.
