Imagine strolling through the picturesque streets of an Italian village, bargaining in a bustling Moroccan market, or discussing French literature with a native in a Parisian café. What do these experiences have in common? Language. It is the bridge that connects us to diverse cultures and unforgettable experiences. At JesuisPolyglotte, we believe that learning a foreign language goes far beyond just adding to your resume; it is an open door to the world.

Why is English the Language of Choice?

English is often seen as the language of choice due to its global prevalence. Spoken by approximately 500 million people in 45 countries, English is the international language of business, science, and technology. But why learn it? Because mastering English gives you an undeniable competitive edge, whether it’s for landing a job, traveling, or simply expanding your social circle.

A Lifelong Linguist’s Perspective

As a passionate linguist, I have always been fascinated by the cognitive impact of language learning. Did you know that learning new languages expands brain size and improves its ability to process, organize, and store information? It’s a mental workout that keeps your mind sharp and young, making you more adaptable to different environments.

Imagine yourself sitting comfortably in the cozy living room of an English house, a cup of tea in hand, engaging in a lively conversation with your host, a certified teacher. It is in this intimate and welcoming setting that JesuisPolyglotte offers you a unique linguistic immersion experience, far from traditional classrooms and standardized programs. But how long does it take to master English in such an environment? Let’s explore this fascinating question together.

Linguistic Immersion: A Proven Method

Learning a language is not just about online courses or grammar books. Of course, these tools have their place, but nothing replaces the immersive experience in an English-speaking country. Indeed, only a prolonged stay abroad allows you to study effectively, embrace the culture, and practice the language naturally and spontaneously.

JesuisPolyglotte embodies this philosophy. By living with a private teacher, you are immersed in an environment where the target language is everywhere. Every conversation, meal, and outing becomes an opportunity to learn. This personalized and contextual approach is one of the most effective ways to make rapid and lasting progress.

How Long to Speak English Fluently?

It is challenging to precisely quantify the time needed to master English, as it depends on many factors: your starting level, your motivation, your adaptability, and of course, the intensity of your immersion. However, on average, a student begins to understand English after 3 to 6 months of active immersion.

Your Starting Level

Your learning journey will obviously depend on your starting level. An absolute beginner will need more time than a student with a solid foundation. However, thanks to JesuisPolyglotte‘s personalized approach, each stay is tailored to your level and goals, allowing you to progress at your own pace.

Your Personal Investment

Learning a language is a journey, and like any journey, it requires commitment. Your will and determination will play a crucial role in your progress. By fully immersing yourself in the culture and actively engaging in every interaction, you will maximize your chances of success.

The Importance of Total Immersion

Total immersion in an English-speaking country is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to learn English. By living with a teacher, you benefit from individual attention and a tailor-made learning experience. You are not just exposed to the language; you live it daily.

Learning the Language in Context

With JesuisPolyglotte, learning happens naturally, through authentic conversations and daily activities. Whether it’s during a city tour, a shared meal, or a simple walk, every moment is an opportunity to learn. This contextual immersion helps you learn the language in context, understand cultural nuances, and develop genuine linguistic fluency.

Various Methods for Comprehensive Learning

One of the strengths of JesuisPolyglotte‘s approach lies in the variety of learning methods offered. In addition to daily conversations, teachers use a variety of resources and activities to enrich your experience:

  • Phonetic Flashcards: Ideal for improving your pronunciation and understanding the different sounds of English.
  • Interactive Exercises: To reinforce your grammatical and lexical skills in a fun way.
  • Animated Videos and Songs: To familiarize yourself with varied accents and intonations of the English language.
  • Recommended Books and Learning Materials: Selected to complement your immersion and deepen your knowledge.

Overcoming Language Barriers

It is natural to feel intimidated by the prospect of learning a new language, especially when considering traveling abroad. For example, you might wonder: “Do people speak English in Madrid?” or “How will I manage without speaking English fluently?” These concerns are legitimate, but total immersion allows you to overcome these barriers quickly.

By living in an English-speaking environment, you are constantly exposed to the language, which allows you to develop an intuitive understanding and gain confidence. JesuisPolyglotte accompanies you on this journey, offering a secure and stimulating framework to express yourself freely.

Conclusion: A Tailor-Made Linguistic Journey

Learning English with JesuisPolyglotte is much more than a simple language course. It is a personalized adventure that allows you to deeply immerse yourself in the culture and develop an authentic mastery of the language. Whether you are a student, a professional, or retired, this linguistic immersion experience offers you a unique opportunity to progress rapidly while discovering a new cultural universe.

So, how long does it take to learn English? The answer depends on you, your commitment, and your desire to fully immerse yourself in this linguistic adventure. With JesuisPolyglotte, you have all the tools at hand to succeed and experience an unforgettable journey.

The post UK ETA Required from April 2025: Everything EU Residents Need to Know Before Visiting the UK appeared first on Je Suis Polyglotte.

]]>
If you’re an EU resident planning a language study trip or a short stay in the UK, you need to be aware of upcoming changes to travel requirements. Since 2 April 2025, all visa-exempt EU citizens must obtain a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA UK) before entering the United Kingdom.

But what exactly is this ETA, how do you apply for it, and when might you need an actual visa instead? Here’s everything you need to prepare for your next language immersion experience or leisure trip in the UK.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is an electronic authorisation introduced by the British government to streamline entry for visitors who don’t require a full visa. It has been mandatory since 2 April 2025 for all EU travellers planning short-term stays (up to 6 months).

The ETA allows multiple entries to the UK, each up to six months, and remains valid for two years or until the passport you used for your application expires. Remember: you must travel with the same passport you used when applying for your ETA.

Who Needs the UK ETA?

From April 2025, the ETA is required for all visa-exempt travellers from the European Union—including children—who wish to enter the UK for:

  • Tourism
  • Visiting family and friends
  • Short-term studies (under 6 months)
  • Business trips

Irish citizens, British citizens, and EU residents who already hold valid settled or pre-settled status in the UK will not need an ETA.

How to Apply for the UK ETA?

Applying for the ETA is easy. Applications open on 5th March 2025, and you can apply through:

  • The official “UK ETA” app, available on Google Play and the App Store.
  • The UK government’s official website (gov.uk).

You’ll need:

  • A valid passport
  • A recent digital photo
  • An active email address
  • A credit/debit card to pay the application fee (£20 since 8 April 2026)

ETA approvals usually take around three working days. However, it’s wise to apply at least one week ahead, especially if your language course or travel plans are already confirmed.

When Do You Need a UK Visa Instead?

For stays exceeding six months or specific purposes such as university studies, internships, employment, or long-term residence, you must apply for the appropriate UK visa instead of an ETA. In these cases, visit the official gov.uk website or consult an immigration advisor.

Essential Documents for UK Travel from 2025

From April 2025, you’ll need the following documents to visit the UK:

  • Valid passport: National ID cards from EU countries are no longer accepted since 1st October 2021.
  • ETA UK: Required for short stays (up to 6 months).
  • Specific UK visa: Required only for stays longer than six months or other specific purposes mentioned above.

📌 Will I need a visa to travel to the UK in 2025?

Since 2 April 2025, EU citizens visiting the UK for short stays (tourism, family visits, short-term study, or business, up to 6 months) will need the new UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), not a visa.

📌 What is the new rule for visiting the UK in 2025?

Since 2 April 2025, EU travellers must have a valid passport and an approved UK ETA for short stays (up to 6 months). National ID cards are no longer accepted.

📌 Is the UK ETA already in effect?

Yes. The UK ETA has been mandatory for EU travellers since 2 April 2025. It costs £20 (since 8 April 2026) and is applied for online, via the official \”UK ETA\” app or gov.uk. Applications opened on 5 March 2025.

Who comes on this stay

The same house welcomes, in different weeks, someone who has been riding for twenty years and someone who has never sat on a horse. Adults who work in English take one or two weeks at twenty-five or thirty hours and keep the riding sessions for the afternoon; someone picking the language up again after thirty years asks for fifteen, because it is outside the lesson that the talking happens — in the car on the way to the yard, over the tea afterwards, in a country pub in the evening, which is for over-eighteens. In Munster, around Limerick and Cork, the teachers live in the middle of farming country: the nearest neighbour can be a field away, and English arrives with whoever calls in. Travellers with a few more years behind them come in May or in September, when the ground is good and the lanes are quiet, and in the evening they go back to a house where there is someone to talk to instead of a hotel room.

If it is your child who is going, the first thing we send you is the host family’s profile, and in the evening it is they who ask how the day went: your child is the only student in the house and is looked after day to day by the host family. Until he is eighteen the afternoons do not stay empty — the lessons always go together with activities or accompanied visits, so he is out with the teacher, at the yard or on the farm, instead of upstairs with his phone. Under sixteen, someone chosen by us meets him at Shannon or Cork, or at Dublin if the family lives on that side, unless you are travelling with him yourselves. And a younger child is never on his own: an adult is with him at every moment, and that closer supervision can be kept up to eighteen if you would rather have it. Ireland is one of the two countries, with New Zealand, where the farm activities exist: the harvest, the fruit picking, the animals waiting to be fed before breakfast — a thirteen-year-old who will not open his mouth in a classroom answers in English because his hands are busy.

Frequently asked questions about English and horse riding in Ireland

How do the riding sessions work, and do I need to have ridden before?

The riding is booked as a sport option alongside the lessons: at least three sessions a week, and the number changes with the sport and with the destination. You tell us your level when you book — never on a horse, or competing at home — and the instructor starts from there; the sessions are normally one to one with a professional instructor, sometimes with someone from the family. They depend on availability and on the weather: a session can move to a different area and, in rare cases, become another sport or an afternoon out with the teacher. The sessions, the accompanied transport and the hire of the equipment where it is provided are included.

Do the stays always run from Sunday to Saturday?

Yes. You arrive on a Sunday, you leave on a Saturday, and the lessons run from Monday to Friday. If your flight lands late into Shannon or Cork, tell us: we let the family know and the arrival is organised around it. If you need one or two extra nights, they are added to the stay.

I have an allergy, or I would rather not stay in a house with pets. Is that possible?

Yes, and it is one of the first things we ask. In Ireland a good number of the teachers live in the country, sometimes with a working farm next to the house, so there are dogs, cats and animals in the yard. Before we propose a host we know whether there are pets, children or smokers in the house, and how the family eats. You see the profile before you confirm, and if something does not suit you we look for another family.

How many hours of lessons a day, and who sets the timetable?

You choose 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 hours a week, and the 10-hour option goes together with general activities, cultural visits or farm activities. The timetable is set with your teacher: two hours in the morning and one after lunch, or the whole block in one go. If you are coming mainly to talk and to ride, 10 or 15 hours leave the afternoon free for the yard and for the ordinary life of the house.

What do the activities with the teacher include?

Moments of ordinary life rather than lessons in disguise: baking a loaf of brown bread, the market, a walk along the hedgerows, the cinema, a board game, a hurling match in the local field, a village festival. In Ireland the farm activities are added to that list — the harvest, the fruit picking, a morning spent on the farm — and they are offered here and in New Zealand. Transport and any entrance fees are included during those hours. Cultural visits are a separate option, with a list of their own for each destination.

Can I have a private bathroom? And what if I would rather keep my own accommodation?

A private bathroom is available as an option, depending on the host; without it you share the family bathroom. And if you already have somewhere to stay, a rented cottage or a hotel in Limerick, the lessons-only formula keeps the same one-to-one lessons at the teacher’s home, without the accommodation or the meals.

What is the weather like in Ireland, season by season?

Mild, wet and changeable inside the same day. Spring and early autumn are the kindest months for riding out: roughly 12 to 18 degrees, light late into the evening, showers that pass in twenty minutes. The summer rarely turns hot and July can be as wet as November. It almost never freezes in winter, but the days are short and the ground gets heavy. A waterproof jacket earns its place in any season: a riding session can be moved because of the weather, the day out cannot.

What if none of the profiles suits me?

You say so, and we keep looking. It sometimes takes two or three proposals before the right one: the family is what matters most, and you only confirm once you have said yes to a specific family. Our teachers are in the Dublin area, in Munster around Limerick and Cork, over towards Galway and in Ulster, in town and in the country, so a second profile can mean a different landscape altogether.

Can my teenager come to Ireland on their own?

Yes. Your child is the only student in the house, lives in the teacher’s own family and is looked after day to day by the host family. Until eighteen the lessons always come with activities or accompanied visits, so the afternoon is spent out with the teacher rather than alone; under sixteen someone we have chosen meets the flight at Shannon, Cork or Dublin, unless you are travelling with your child yourselves; and under thirteen an adult is present at every moment, a closer supervision you can keep up to eighteen if you prefer. You receive the host family’s profile before anything is confirmed. Ireland is also one of the two countries where the farm activities exist, so the eggs to collect and the animals to feed give a teenager who is coming for the horses a second reason to be outside.

🏡 Learn English at Your Own Pace with a Language Stay in Malta – A Home Away from Home

Instead of a traditional classroom, our immersion language programs offer a tailored learning experience with a host teacher. You’ll live with a local English teacher, where everyday conversations—whether at the breakfast table or during an afternoon walk—become natural learning moments.

With specialized language courses designed to fit your individual needs, you’ll develop language skills at your own pace, whether you’re preparing for travel, improving fluency, or simply looking for an enjoyable way to learn.

And because the best way to learn a language abroad is by speaking it daily, you speak English from the first breakfast onwards, with one teacher who listens to you all week.

🌅 Slow Down, Soak It In, and Speak with Confidence

A language stay in Malta is more than just learning English—it’s a chance to experience life as a local, connect with culture, and enjoy every moment of your journey.

Whether you’re exploring historic villages, sharing a meal with your teacher, or practicing English while discovering the island, this experience is designed to be unhurried, and nothing on the island is far away.

Who Comes to Malta: Adults, Seniors and Teenagers

Very different people come to Malta with us, and each of them is the only student in the teacher’s home. For a working adult, one or two intensive weeks are enough, and what you learn in the morning gets used the same afternoon, because English is one of Malta’s two official languages: the bus timetable, the newspaper and the pharmacy counter are all in English. For over-50s and retired travellers, November to March is the season to look at: the days in Valletta sit around 15 degrees and the island is quiet. The flight is about three hours from most of western Europe, the airport at Luqa has a single terminal, and nothing on an island 27 kilometres long involves a long drive.

Teenagers are hosted one at a time, which for a parent is the alternative to a group summer course. Your child is the only student, lives in the teacher’s own family and is looked after day to day by the host family. Under 18, accompanied activities or visits are compulsory. Under 16, the transfer is compulsory unless the parents accompany the child themselves. Under 13, closer supervision is compulsory, with an adult present at all times. You receive the host family’s profile before anything is confirmed.

In Malta the logistics are simple: there is one airport, at Luqa, and no journey from it to the host’s village takes much more than an hour, so you know where your child is going and when they will arrive. English is spoken outside the house as well as at the table — on the bus, at the kiosk, at the lido — so your child keeps using it between lessons, and the ferry to Gozo or the bus network covers anything the family plans at the weekend.

Why choose a language stay in Malta?

A language stay in Malta offers the perfect mix of English learning and Mediterranean lifestyle. With a warm climate, rich history, and native English-speaking environment, it’s an ideal place to improve your skills in an immersive and relaxed setting.

How does a language stay in Malta work?

You live and learn with a native English teacher, receiving personalized lessons and practicing English daily through real-life interactions, from meals to cultural activities. This immersive experience ensures rapid progress and confidence in speaking.

How long does it take to improve English with a language stay in Malta?

Even a 1 to 2-week stay can significantly enhance fluency and confidence. Longer stays allow for deeper immersion, improving pronunciation, comprehension, and overall communication skills.

Do the stays always run from Sunday to Saturday?

Yes. You arrive on a Sunday, you leave on a Saturday, and lessons run from Monday to Friday. If your flight lands late on the Sunday evening at Luqa, tell us: we let the family know and the arrival is organised around it. And if you need one or two extra nights, they are added to the stay.

I have an allergy, or I would rather not stay in a house with pets. Is that possible?

Yes, and it is one of the first things we ask. Before we propose a host, we know whether there are pets, children or smokers in the house, and how the family eats. Many Maltese homes are town houses built around a courtyard or a roof terrace rather than a garden. You see the profile before you confirm, and if something does not suit you we look for another family.

How many hours of lessons a day, and who sets the timetable?

You choose 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 hours a week, and the 10-hour option is combined with activities or cultural visits. The timetable is set with your teacher: two hours in the morning and one after lunch, or the whole block in one go, depending on your concentration and on what you want to do outside. In July and August, put the lessons in the morning and keep the afternoon for the sea. If you are coming mainly to talk, 10 or 15 hours with activities leave room for the ordinary life of the house.

What do the activities with the teacher include?

Moments of ordinary life, not lessons in disguise: cooking or baking together, the Sunday fish market at Marsaxlokk, a walk through the streets of Mdina, the cinema, a board game, a village festa, a swim or a picnic. You choose them with your teacher, according to your interests and to what is near their home. During those hours, transport and entrance fees are included. Cultural visits — Valletta, the Three Cities, the temples at Ħaġar Qim — are a separate option, with a list of their own for each destination.

Can I have a private bathroom? And what if I would rather keep my own accommodation?

A private bathroom is available as an option, depending on the host. And if you already have somewhere to stay on the island, a flat in Sliema or a hotel in St Julian’s, the lessons-only formula keeps the same one-to-one lessons at the teacher’s home, without the accommodation.

What is the weather like in Malta, season by season?

July and August are hot and dry, often above 30 degrees and humid, and the sea stays warm into late October. Winter is mild rather than cold: around 15 degrees during the day, with rain and wind between November and February. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons for walking Valletta or Mdina in the middle of the day. If you want daylight and a course out of season, Malta works from November to March.

What if none of the profiles suits me?

You say so, and we keep looking. It sometimes takes two or three proposals before the right one: the family is what matters most, and you only confirm once you have said yes to a specific family. Malta is small, so a different host usually means a different village rather than a different part of the country.

Can my teenager come to Malta on their own, hosted by a teacher’s family?

Yes. Malta has one airport, at Luqa, and no journey to the host’s village takes much more than an hour. English is one of the island’s two official languages, so your child keeps speaking it on the bus and in the shop, not only at the table.
